Last night, while playing on DT, I got pissed of those chops/lags some of us get supposedly because of Punkbuster and thought it was time to find a solution.
I asked around and got some input I'd like to share:
A) You can run Quake III on all your cores by setting the r_smp variable to 1 ("r_smp 1" in console, then restart q3). Be aware it may cause your q3 to freeze on startup (it did to me) as this command is pretty buggued. If this works for you, you should have some FPS increase and less lag although this trick is not PB related.
B) Also, putting Punkbuster services on one core while putting Q3 on the other will give you a great FPS/steadiness boost - especially if like me, Q3 was/is eating all your CPU ressources on 1 core. To do that, download ProcessWatch (I got it from Softpedia). Install it, then:
B) 1) Go to the monitor tab
B) 2) Search for the PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB processes and add them to the monitored list. Double click on each of them and ISOLATE them on one of your CPU's core, for instance Core 0.
B) 3) Run Q3, and put it on window mode (alt + enter). Then search and add it to the monitored list. Double click on it and ISOLATE it on the other CPU core (that is Core 1 if u selected Core 0 for Punkbuster). Also, put its priority on Real Time.
Have fun and enjoy a game free of lags
