Obviously, Obama being elected president already had a huge impact world-wide. I've heard on a french TV program which I watch (C Dans l'air: a show about current affairs with guests from various backgrounds, usually experts on the topic covered) on a regular basis that he already is the most liked individual person in the world. And guess what, Michelle (Obama) comes second!
The first effect is that it will reduce the easiness to gather fresh meat for suicide attacks, as who would want to attack a country in which a BLACK president got elected democratically?
This is a huge opening, and a great adventure which begins now. The bad side is he won't last 8 years like Bush did, because the odds are the financial crisis will worsen whether Obama takes good decisions or not. This is a personal opinion though. I suppose that "It's not the end. It's not the beginning of the end either, but the end of the beginning" (Just like Winston Churchill said, another great human being). I don't want to scare you off but the worst has yet to come.
Indeed, as some of you may already know, the Earth is a big place, but there will come a time when we can no longer afford to have more human beings, a time when demographical growth stops. A few famous scientists worked on that and the general figure (neither low nor high, middle one) is that Earth Population size should stop growing and stagnate at 9B by 2050. By then, the demographical force on economical growth will be reduced to a zero. As we all know, populations tend to age in every developed country, because every day life expectancy grows, which means there will be less workers and ultimately less work force.
This means by 2050, the economical growth will not only dimimnish but we will enter into a new era, the recession era. This will be a hard time in which we will need to find out peaceful and long-term issues to re-design our current life styles.
The solution is already inside every one of us but we need Great Men, or Great Symbols like Barack Obama, to help us tend to the greater good which I'm sure we'll eventually do.
