Well to be honest it was just an experiment, I can tell you how I did it but there will probably be a lot easier way than mine .
This is how I did it:
1. I opened quake in a different mod so my config wouldn't be screwed up. I used freezeDT, also because efreeze was blocking the /cg_thirdpersonview 1 option.
2. I chose the model I used in the single player option and chose a random map, after the map loaded I chose a random map to make a demo with /devmap (map) - this enabled cheats for the people who don't know.
3. Enabling cheats made it possible to use /cg_thirdpersonview 1, I chose a nice spot to make a short demo with just the gesture. Furthermore I used /cg_thirdpersonangle 180 and /cg_thirdpersonrange 80.
4. I demo'd it with /g_synchronousclients 1 and /record (demo).
5. I typed /cl_avidemo 25 in my console and watched the demo, at the end of the gesture I typed /demo demo1 and a sequence of screenshots appeared in my FreezeDT folder.
6. I used Irfanview to watch the demo with screenshots and I threw away the unusefull screenshots (the animations can not be too long because they will load a lot slower... In my opinion mine load too slow too).
7. I used Adobe Photoshop and made a new "action". I recorded a sequence of acts which were basicly cropping, and adding the name for which I downloaded a new font and used blending options for the shade, outer glow and texture details.
8. I automated the batch for the whole sequence of targa screenshots (about 120) and saved them in a different folder.
9. I used Virtualdubmod to save the demo as a divx file which I converted with a random AVI GIF converter I found in Google.
10. The gif file was too big so I used a gif optimizer which reduced the size for more than 50% and kept the quality the same.
The whole creation of 1 avatar costs me about 40 minutes. So I'm trying to make 1 every day since I only have free time in the evening.
